Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis generally affects women where there is a thinning of bone tissue that leads to a gradual loss of bone density. Sometimes the bone loss is so severe, that even hugging a loved one can cause painful fractures.

Symptoms
Osteoporosis may attack any time as there are no signs or symptoms leading to it. Loss of height or a development of Dowager’s hump are some symptoms that may develop with age. However doctors generally diagnose osteoporosis only after a painful fracture which usually occurs in the back or hips.

Causes
There are no definite causes of osteoporosis, but it develops throughout one’s life. The human body constantly breaks down old bone, and rebuilds new bones. Most people experience maximum bone mass in their bodies during the third decade of life after which, the new bone is rebuilt at a slower rate.

This slowdown leads to a decrease in the bone mass in the body, and osteoporosis. It is possible to detect the degree of bone loss through a bone mineral density test or bone density scan.

Risks
The risk factors are family history, sex factor where women are more susceptible to it and age as the older you are, the higher is your risk of a fracture. Smoking, some medications like thyroid drugs and antacids, and petite women with low bone weight and structure are other risks for osteoporosis. You can reduce your chances of osteoporosis by knowing and changing these risks.

Treatment
Osteoporosis treatment aims at stopping bone loss and reducing the chances of a fracture by taking calcium and vitamin D dietary supplements, weight bearing exercises, stopping smoking and taking osteoporosis medications.

 Preventive measures
It is possible to prevent osteoporosis with regular exercise to strengthen bones and muscles, increasing your calcium intake by including more dark green vegetables and milk and dairy products to your diet or by taking calcium supplements if you don’t get sufficient dietary calcium.
Sun exposure for 20 minutes a day helps provide vitamin D to your body, which is necessary for helping the body absorb calcium. Even eggs, cereal, vitamin D fortified milk and supplements provide your body with the required vitamin D.

According to a team of researchers from Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Science, , physically inactive women leading a sedentary lifestyle are at a higher risk of suffering from osteoporosis in old age than women who do regular, weight bearing exercises. This observation is very important as the International Osteoporosis Foundation estimate that about 200 million women suffer from osteoporosis worldwide.
